Buying advice for an Child / youth Mountainbike
Frame material
Aluminium frames are widely used for children's e-mountain bikes as they offer a good balance between strength, durability and weight. Aluminium frames are lighter than steel frames and still offer sufficient rigidity and stability for off-road use. Steel frames are also an option for children's e-mountain bikes. Steel frames are robust and durable, offer a smooth ride quality and absorb vibrations well. However, they are usually heavier than aluminium frames and may require a little more maintenance to prevent rusting. Carbon frames are less common in children's e-mountain bikes, but are found in some high-end models. Carbon frames offer high strength combined with low weight.
Chassis
Many children's e-mountain bikes are equipped with a suspension fork at the front, which absorbs shocks and vibrations from the road or terrain. A suspension fork improves the riding comfort and control of the bike, especially on bumpy trails and paths. Some high-quality models may also have suspension at the rear. The suspension on children's e-mountain bikes can often be adjusted to suit the weight and riding preferences of the young rider. This can include preload, suspension travel and damping to ensure optimum performance and control of the bike.
Wheels
The wheel size for children's e-mountain bikes varies depending on the age and height of the child and the specific design of the bike. Common sizes are 20 inch, 24 inch and 26 inch. The right size ensures an appropriate fit and balanced riding behaviour for the child. The rims of the wheels can be made of different materials, including aluminium alloys and possibly carbon fibre. Aluminium rims are widely used as they offer a good balance between weight, strength and durability. Robust and durable spokes are generally used for children's e-mountain bikes, which can withstand the additional stresses of off-road riding and off-road terrain.
Tyres
Typical sizes for children's mountain bike tyres are 20 inch, 24 inch and 26 inch, with the exact size depending on the specific model. The tyre tread is important for grip and traction on different terrains. For children's mountain bikes, tyres with a coarse tread pattern are recommended to provide good grip on gravel paths, roots, mud and other rough surfaces. The tyre width influences the handling of the bike. Wider tyres generally offer more traction and stability, especially on loose surfaces. Some children's e-mountain bikes can be fitted with tubeless-compatible wheels. Tubeless tyres offer the advantage of lower rolling resistance and improved puncture resistance as they do not require inner tubes.
Brakes
The brakes on an e-bike children's mountain bike are a crucial safety component and help to bring the bike to a safe and controlled stop. Rim brakes are a common choice for children's e-mountain bikes. They offer good braking power and are easy to maintain. Disc brakes offer improved braking performance and are particularly popular on children's e-mountain bikes as they can provide reliable braking power regardless of the weather conditions. Some children's e-mountain bikes may also be equipped with a coaster brake, which is activated by the rider pedalling backwards. This type of brake is easy to operate and does not require additional brake levers on the handlebars. The choice of brakes depends on various factors, including the child's personal preferences, the riding environment and the budget.
Battery motor
The children's e-bike MTB is equipped with a motor that typically offers an output of 250 to 750 watts. These motors are specially designed for use on mountain bikes for children and provide adequate support and acceleration for riding on challenging trails. Together with a reliable battery, they provide a constant power supply for off-road adventures or everyday use.
