E-Bike Singlespeed

The singlespeed e-bike is a bicycle with only a single gear. Unlike a fixie, a singlespeed bike usually has a freewheel hub, which means that the pedals can turn independently of the speed of the bike without moving the wheel.

  • Frame material

The frame material of a single-speed e-bike can vary depending on the manufacturer and model. Aluminium frames are generally widely used for e-bikes due to their lightness and rigidity. They offer a good balance between weight, strength and cost and are therefore a popular choice for singlespeed e-bikes. Steel frames are known for their durability, shock absorption and their ability to absorb vibrations, which can lead to a more comfortable ride. Steel frames also often give the bike a classic look and can be found on singlespeed e-bikes. Carbon frames are very light and offer excellent stiffness, resulting in efficient power transfer. However, carbon frames are often more expensive than aluminium or steel frames and are therefore less common on single-speed e-bikes.

  • Suspension

A well-tuned chassis helps to ensure that the single-speed e-bike offers a pleasant riding experience and can be ridden safely and under control. The fork of a single-speed e-bike can be made of various materials such as aluminium, steel or carbon. It contributes to the shock absorption and stability of the bike and influences the steering behaviour. Some singlespeed bikes, especially those designed for use on uneven roads or off-road, may have suspension to absorb shocks and vibrations and improve riding comfort.

  • Wheels

Wheel size can vary depending on the model, but typically 700c wheels are used for singlespeed bikes. This size offers a good balance between speed and stability, and is also commonly found on e-bike singlespeeds. The rims of singlespeed e-bikes can be made of different materials such as aluminium, carbon or steel. Aluminium rims are lightweight and offer a good balance between weight and strength. Carbon rims are even lighter and often offer improved stiffness and aerodynamics, but are also more expensive. Steel rims are robust but heavier than aluminium or carbon rims. The spokes contribute to the stability and strength of the wheels. They can be made of different materials such as steel or aluminium and come in different designs to optimise weight or increase stiffness.

  • Tyres

The tyre size is often determined by the size of the wheels. For many singlespeed bikes, including e-bike singlespeeds, 700c tyres are the most common choice. This size offers a good balance between speed and comfort. Smooth or slightly treaded tyres are ideal for road use, as they offer less rolling friction and allow you to move efficiently. If the single-speed e-bike is also used off-road, tyres with a slightly coarse tread can provide additional traction. Wider tyres generally offer more comfort as they can absorb bumps better, while narrower tyres can enable a faster ride on smooth surfaces.

  • Brakes

For an e-bike singlespeed, brakes are crucial for safety and control while riding. Rim brakes are a common choice for singlespeed bikes and can also be used on e-bike fixies. These brakes offer good stopping power and are easy to maintain. Disc brakes offer improved braking performance and are particularly popular on e-bikes as they can provide reliable stopping power regardless of the weather conditions. Some singlespeed bikes use a coaster brake, which is activated by the rider pedalling backwards. It is easy to operate and requires no additional levers on the handlebars.

  • Battery motor

The single-speed e-bike is equipped with a motor that usually offers an output of 250 to 750 watts. These motors are specially designed for use on bicycles with a single gear and provide adequate support and acceleration for riding in urban environments. As a rule, single-speed e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 25 km/h. Popular motor manufacturers include Bosch, Shimano and Brose.
