Buying advice for: Trekking / Touring: Frameset

  • Frame material

Choosing the right frame material is crucial for the performance, comfort and durability of your trekking or touring bike. The most common materials for framesets are aluminium, steel, carbon and titanium. Aluminium frames are light, stiff and inexpensive, while steel frames are known for their robustness, suppleness and durability. Steel frames are considered robust and durable. They offer adequate cushioning, which is an advantage on long tours on uneven terrain. However, steel frames tend to be heavier than frames made from other materials. Carbon frames are extremely light and offer high rigidity, which enables excellent energy transfer. They also absorb vibrations well and offer a degree of comfort on long rides. However, carbon frames tend to be more expensive than steel or aluminium frames and may require special maintenance. Titanium frames are very light and at the same time very robust. They offer excellent corrosion resistance and high durability. However, titanium frames are often the most expensive option due to the complex manufacturing process and material costs. The choice of frame depends on various factors, including budget, riding style, desired ride quality and personal preference.

  • Frame types

Trekking and touring framesets are available in different types, reflecting different rider requirements and preferences. This is the classic bicycle frame type with a triangular frame consisting of a top tube, seat tube and down tube. Diamond frames are robust and offer an excellent balance between stiffness and comfort. They are suitable for many types of trekking and touring adventures and provide a versatile platform for pannier racks and accessories. Also known as Mixte frames, these frames have a lower step-through height, making it easier to get on and off the bike. Low step-through frames are particularly practical for riders who have mobility issues or prefer a more comfortable position on the bike. These frames are designed for use on mixed terrain and often offer more tyre clearance as well as mounting options for mudguards and pannier racks. Cyclocross frames are versatile and well suited for adventure rides and longer tours. Designed specifically for long-distance touring, touring bike frames are often more robust and offer a more comfortable geometry for long days in the saddle. They are usually equipped with mounting points for pannier racks, mudguards and bottle cages and offer space for wider tyres and possibly additional equipment.

  • Geometry

The geometry of the frame directly influences the ride quality, comfort and handling of your trekking or touring bike. An upright riding position is typical for these types of bikes and provides a comfortable posture for long rides. A stable and balanced geometry ensures reliable riding performance, while a moderate wheelbase length and a medium trail make the bike manoeuvrable and allow good control on different types of terrain.

  • Size

The right frame size is crucial for a comfortable and efficient ride. The wrong frame size can lead to discomfort, injury and a poor riding experience. To determine the correct size, you should measure your stride length and compare it to the manufacturer's sizing guide. It is also advisable to take a test ride to ensure that the frame fits correctly and feels comfortable. A well-fitting frame size allows for an optimal riding position and efficient power transfer, which contributes to a pleasant riding experience.
