E-Bike Compact Bike

The e-bike compact bike is characterised by its compact and space-saving design. This can mean that the bike has a smaller frame geometry to make it easier to transport or store. Some compact e-bikes are even foldable.

  • Frame material

Aluminium frames are widely used for compact e-bikes. They are lightweight, rigid and corrosion resistant, making them ideal for use in urban environments. Aluminium frames are also relatively inexpensive, making them a popular choice for many e-bike manufacturers. Steel frames are robust and durable, but often offer a higher weight compared to aluminium frames. However, they can offer good shock absorption and a smooth ride. Carbon frames are lightweight and offer excellent stiffness, resulting in efficient power transfer.

  • Chassis

The suspension of an e-bike compact bike refers to the components that affect the bike's handling, comfort and stability. The fork plays a decisive role in the steering behaviour and shock absorption of the e-bike compact bike. Aluminium or steel forks are often used to provide a good balance between weight, stiffness and comfort. Some e-bike compact bikes may have suspension to absorb shocks and vibrations and improve riding comfort. These can be mounted either on the front fork or on the seat tube and are particularly useful if the bike is also used on uneven roads or paths.

  • Wheels

The wheel size can vary depending on the manufacturer and model. For many e-bike compact bikes, 20-inch or 24-inch wheels are used. These smaller wheels contribute to the compactness and manoeuvrability of the bike and are often better suited for use in urban environments where tight corners and obstacles are common. The rims can be made of different materials such as aluminium, carbon or steel. Aluminium rims are lightweight and offer good durability, while carbon rims are even lighter and often offer better stiffness and aerodynamics. Steel rims are robust but heavier than aluminium or carbon rims. Spokes contribute to the stability and strength of the wheels. They can be made of different materials such as steel or aluminium and should be well tensioned.

  • Tyres

The tyre size depends on the size of the wheels used for the e-bike compact bike. Typically, smaller wheel sizes such as 20 inch or 24 inch tyres are preferred for compact bikes. The profile of the tyre influences the traction, rolling resistance and handling of the e-bike compact bike. Tyres with a smooth or slightly profiled tread pattern are ideal for use in the city, as they offer lower rolling resistance and enable efficient movement on asphalt roads. The tyre width has an impact on the comfort, traction and stability of the e-bike compact bike. Wider tyres usually offer more comfort and traction, especially on uneven surfaces, while narrower tyres can enable a faster ride on smooth roads.

  • Brakes

Rim brakes are a common choice for compact e-bikes and can also be used on e-bike fixies. These brakes offer good stopping power and are easy to maintain. Disc brakes offer improved braking performance and are particularly popular on e-bikes as they can provide reliable stopping power regardless of the weather conditions. Some e-bike compact bikes may also be equipped with a coaster brake, which is activated by the rider pedalling backwards. However, a combination of coaster brake and rim brake is also a possible braking option for compact e-bikes.

  • Battery motor

The compact e-bike is equipped with a motor that usually offers an output of 250 to 750 watts. These motors are specially designed for use on compact bikes and provide adequate support and acceleration for riding in urban environments or for transport on public transport. The combination of battery and motor makes the compact e-bike a practical and environmentally friendly means of transport for city dwellers.
