What matters with a mountain bike
Riding style matters
For trail and enduro, the smaller, more playful size works well. For cross-country and long rides, go for the larger, more stretched-out size.
Reach before frame height
Modern MTBs are sized by reach (frame length). Two size M frames can differ by several centimetres.
Standover height & seatpost
You should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet firmly on the ground. With a dropper post, check the maximum insertion depth.
