Bike frame size: how to measure your inseam

For frame height, your inseam (inside leg length) matters more than your height. Two people of the same height can have very different leg lengths.

  1. 1Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall, feet slightly apart (about 15 cm).
  2. 2Pull a book or spirit level up between your legs, held level and with gentle pressure, roughly where a saddle would sit.
  3. 3Measure from the floor to the top edge of the book. It's easiest with someone helping.
  4. 4Enter the value in centimetres in the calculator below.

Calculate your bike frame size

Every bike type has its own geometry. Choose your bike type and enter your measurements. We'll show you right away which size fits and which bikes are available.

There's no standard size in the bike industry, and every manufacturer measures a little differently. TCS velocorner.ch uses the BIDEX size chart as a reference. Here you can see frame size as S, M, L, in inches and in cm.

Fine-tuning: find the right model

Frame size is a starting point. Whether a bike really fits also depends on geometry, arm length and riding style.

Compare stack & reach

Stack (height) and reach (length) tell you more than frame size. The same size doesn't mean the same riding position. Compare the values in the listing or on the manufacturer's site. Arm length plays a part too: riders with long arms often feel better on a slightly longer frame.

Check the size for a model: the bike size calculator

Found a bike you like? On many listings you can open the size calculator. As well as height and inseam, it takes your riding style, gender and arm length into account and shows the right frame size for that exact model.

  1. 1

    Choose riding style and gender

Size calculator step 1: choose riding style

Sporty, neutral or beginner: your riding style helps decide whether the larger or smaller size fits better.

  2. 2

    Set your height

Size calculator step 3: set your height

Use the slider to set your height in centimetres.

  3. 3

    Adjust inseam and arm length

Size calculator step 5: adjust arm length

The calculator suggests average values. If your legs or arms differ, measure them and adjust the values. How to measure your inseam.

Frequently asked questions about frame size

With long legs and a short upper body, go for the larger size; with short legs, the smaller one. If you ride in a sporty, stretched position, size up; if you ride upright and playfully (e.g. on trails), size down.

Manufacturers measure frame height differently (to the middle or the top of the top tube) and give sizes in cm, inches or S/M/L. That's why we use the BIDEX size chart as a common reference.

Yes. For e-mountain bikes, calculate as for a mountain bike; for e-trekking and e-city bikes, as for a trekking bike. Step-through frames often come in fewer sizes but are more forgiving.

For kids bikes, wheel size in inches is what counts. Sitting on the saddle, the child should reach the ground with the balls of both feet. Don't buy one to grow into, because a bike that's too big unsettles children. More on the kids bike page.

Many manufacturers give frame size not in cm or inches but as S, M, L or XL. As a rule of thumb: S for 150–160 cm, M for 160–180 cm, L for 180–190 cm and XL for 190–200 cm height. So a size M bike fits most people between 160 and 180 cm.

28 inches is the wheel size, not the frame size. Most adult bikes run on 28 inch wheels, whether the frame is S or XL. So what counts for the right size is the frame height from the chart.

No. Frame size is calculated the same way for women and men, from height and inseam. A women's bike usually has a low step-over (mixte or step-through frame), which makes it a little more forgiving on size.

It's often printed on the seat tube, under the bottom bracket or in the manufacturer's documents. If you can't find it, measure the seat tube from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the tube. That's the frame height in cm.
