During the initial design stages of our Traverse Fattie 29, we realized that there were few aluminum wheels capable of excelling in both challenging descents and the demanding climbs typical of our Northern California testing areas. We also understood that trail riders look for specific features in a reliable, go-anywhere wheelset. We discovered that alloy wheels met many of these expectations while still being affordable, leaving you with some cash for a drink after your ride. In addition to being lightweight, stiff, and durable, usability was another key focus for the Traverse. First, we eliminated the noisy straight-pull spokes and the corrosion-prone alloy nipples. Then, we opted for 28 J-bend spokes on both front and rear wheels, all of the same length, making it easy to find replacements if necessary. Finally, we developed a new hub design with a wider profile and taller flange to enhance overall stiffness. We expanded the traditional 19- to 23-millimeter standard to a tested width of 30mm. A wider rim provides several advantages for ride performance—it offers better tire support for increased confidence and grip, allows for lower pressure, and distributes impacts over a larger surface area to minimize damage risk. We also introduced our Zero Bead hook design, which helps prevent “burps” during aggressive cornering and simplifies tubeless setup.
