Buying advice for: Mountainbike: Fully: Crosscountry
Frame material
The cross-country bike is equipped with a frame made of high-quality aluminium or carbon. These materials offer an optimum combination of lightness and stability, which is essential for the demanding conditions in the cross-country sector. The carbon frame is characterised by its extreme strength and vibration damping, while the aluminium frame impresses with its robustness and durability. Many cross-country bike frames offer various mounting points for accessories such as bottle cages, tool bags or mudguards, which makes it easier to adapt the bike to individual needs and different purposes.
Chassis
The suspension of the cross-country bike includes a precisely tuned suspension fork with a suspension travel of 100 to 120 mm. This suspension fork provides excellent shock absorption and enables optimum control on uneven terrain. In addition, some models are equipped with rear suspension for even more comfort and traction on difficult trails. Another feature of the suspension is the possibility of adjusting the suspension travel, which allows the suspension travel to be adapted to the terrain. This allows the rider to reduce the suspension travel on steep climbs, for example, to achieve better power transmission and efficiency, and to utilise the full suspension travel on descents to ensure optimum control and safety.
Wheels
The wheels of the cross-country bike are specially designed for high speeds and stability. They are made of lightweight yet robust materials such as aluminium or carbon and are available in 27.5 inch or 29 inch sizes. These larger wheels make it easier to roll over obstacles and at the same time offer increased stability and smoothness at high speeds. The spokes of the wheels are made of robust stainless steel or lightweight aluminium and are spoked in a way that ensures maximum stability and strength.
Tyres
The tyres of the cross-country bike are designed to offer maximum grip and minimum rolling resistance. They have a versatile tread pattern that provides excellent traction on both hard, firm paths and loose, muddy surfaces. The tyres are tubeless-ready, which reduces the risk of punctures and offers the option of optimally adjusting the air pressure for different conditions.
Brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes provide the necessary safety and control. These brakes offer powerful and precise braking performance that works reliably in all weather conditions. The hydraulic disc brakes are low-maintenance and ensure constant braking power, which is essential for the demanding descents and technical passages of cross-country riding. Some cross-country bike models are equipped with innovative braking technologies, such as Ice-Tech discs, which prevent the brakes from overheating thanks to special cooling fins. This increases braking performance and extends the service life of the brake components for a maximum number of adventures on uneven terrain.
