After creating the CLX 50s, we identified a gap in the market for an affordable, race-ready carbon wheelset—until the development of the CL 50. We combined our high-performing CLX 50 rim with DT Swiss Competition round spokes, our Aero Flange hubs featuring DT Swiss 350 internals, and steel bearings to provide an outstanding wheelset at a very accessible price. Sharing rims with the CLX 50s, the CL 50s bring many advantages from their higher-end counterparts. Although the CL 50 has a weight comparable to many wheels in the “lightweight” category, aerodynamics were prioritized during development. To achieve this, we heavily employed Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling to explore various rim shapes that would ensure the CL 50 is both fast and lightweight. After an extensive process, we narrowed the rim shape down to three final options, which were then CNC machined into rims, assembled into wheels, and tested in the Wind Tunnel. In the tunnel, we assessed every wheel, including ours and those of our competitors, using a 24C tire (measuring 26C), as tire choice can significantly influence results. We opted for a modern-width tire for our rim design, as it allows for lower tire pressure (leading to improved comfort and reduced rolling resistance) while maintaining excellent aerodynamic efficiency when matched with the appropriate rim width. Finally, it was time for the last phase of testing. The outcome? A clincher wheelset that measures 50mm in depth and weighs 1465 grams, ready for racing and budget-friendly.
