  Velo chains are available in various designs that are optimised for different types of bike and riding styles. Single-speed chains are designed for bicycles without gears and are characterised by their robustness and simplicity. Multi-speed chains, also known as derailleur chains, are suitable for bicycles with derailleur gears and have narrower links to make it easier to change between sprockets. These chains are further subdivided into 7/8-speed, 9-speed, 10-speed, 11-speed and 12-speed chains, depending on the number of sprockets on the rear wheel. E-bike chains are specially reinforced to withstand the higher torques and loads caused by the motor drive.

  There are numerous renowned brands that specialise in the manufacture of high-quality bicycle chains. Shimano is one of the best-known manufacturers and offers a wide range of chains for different bike types and price categories. SRAM is another leading manufacturer known for its innovative and reliable chains. KMC, a Taiwanese brand, is recognised for its durable and versatile chains that are compatible with various shifting systems. Campagnolo, known for its high-quality components in the road bike sector, also offers excellent chains that are specially adapted to their gear groups.

• Materials and workmanship

  The choice of material and the workmanship of a chain influence its durability, performance and maintenance requirements. High-quality chains are often made of alloy steel, which is known for its strength and wear resistance. Some chains have nickel or chrome plated surfaces that provide additional protection against corrosion. Titanium chains are lighter and offer excellent corrosion resistance, but are significantly more expensive. The workmanship, such as precisely manufactured pins and close-tolerance links, contributes to the smooth running and durability of the chain.

• Technical features

  Modern bicycle chains have a number of technical features that improve their performance and ease of maintenance. Hollow pins and milled links reduce weight without compromising strength. Quick-link connections allow easy removal and installation of the chain, making maintenance easier. Chains with special coatings, such as Teflon or DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon), offer reduced friction and a longer service life.
